The meaning
Despite the title, the song isn't really about Japan. "Big in Japan" refers to the phenomenon of Western artists who find fame in Japan but remain unknown at home. The lyrics explore themes of excess, addiction, and the illusions of nightlife — "the eastern sea's so blue."
